THE FIVE STEP PROGRAM It's cool (at least to me) that there's 10 lore threads with thousands of words. But sometimes you just wanna get started and pick stuff up later through osmosis or when you've got the chance, not get overwhelmed with it all at once, especially if you're unfamiliar with the Dragon Age series. If that's the case, this is the only thread you need: the guaranteed 5 step plan to success and getting started on tyrannicides!
(If that's not the case, well--there's like 5k words out there. I hope you'll be satisfied. If not, feel free to ask me to throw more up. There's always more.)
1. Tyrannicides is basically a medieval fantasy RP set in the world of Thedas, where magic is real and horrid twisted monsters that live underground and want to kill you are also real. Fortunately the latter are usually fairly rare on the surface; a decade ago, however, they poured out of the ground in the backwater country of Ferelden and ravaged the kingdom, so a lot more people believe in them then they used to. 2. The rules & plot are here. The shorter version of the rules are "don't be a dick." The shorter version of the plot is "the world has gone to hell in a handbasket." 3. The world is your standard fantasy medieval world--no cellphones. Your best bet for just dipping your toes in enough to get started is reading the info for the country you want your character to be from so you can get a feel for them and deciding what race you want them to be. They are also your standard fantasy races (humans like cockroaches everywhere, lithe exotic elves, stocky dwarves) with the exception of the Qunari, who are a bit of a new spin. 4. Cool, you're almost there! If you want your character to do cool shit, the best bet is the site store for an explanation of spells and abilities. And how they do that cool shit is in the classes guide, which explains the three methods of being a badass on tyrannicides. 5. WE MADE IT TO THE END. Go hogwild on that character application--it's even freeform. Now let's thread-party like the templars are gonna kill our wifi tomorrow. |

FAQ Q: So what in the world is going on?
A: The RP starts six months before the third game in the series, Dragon Age Inquisition. What this means for you is that Thedas is in a very weird place right now. Three years ago in Kirkwall, an independent city-state in the Free Marches, an apostate mage named Anders blew up the Chantry (basically like blowing up a church, for non-DA fans) with everyone still inside in part of his quest for mage freedoms. In the wake of this action, the Knight-Commander of the Kirkwall Templars, Meredith, tried to invoke the Right of Annulment as a result, giving her the right to kill all the mages in the Kirkwall Circle of Magi.
Garrett Hawke let Anders live and chose to side with the mages, resulting in a full-blown rebellion which ended in the deaths of both Knight-Commander Meredith, First Enchanter Orsino of the Circle, and many deaths on both sides. Although templars restored order in Kirkwall, the Circle of Magi across the land began collapsing within the next few years as rebellion spread. As Circles pulled away and it came out that the Divine (the female supreme leader of the Chantry) supported mage rights to an extent, the templar order detached themselves entirely from the Chantry in pursuit of containing mages, which is where Thedas stands in the present day on tyrannicides.
Meanwhile, Orlais is in the midst of a lull in their civil war, Ferelden is rebuilding, the Qunari are watching and waiting and the First Warden meddles in Anderfels politics. Everything is set to explode. The status of individual countries and organizations as of now can be found more in depth in their guides.
Q: Do I have to have played Dragon Age to RP on tyrannicides?
A: Of course not! Tyrannicides is open to devout fans, casual players and complete non-fans alike. The sheer amount of information is mostly for my own peace of mind because I'm a lore completionist, but tyrannicides is designed to be accessible to everyone: just think of it as a plain fantasy RP in that case. However if you've never played the games, reading at bare minimum the COUNTRY GUIDE of your character's homeland, the CLASS GUIDE of what they are and skimming the canon tyrannicides follows to get up on current events will be pretty helpful in getting you up to speed and ready to jump in.
Q: I want to play Fenris/Leliana/Anora/etc, can I?
A: Bioware canons such as the companions and notable NPCs (Flemeth, Cullen, etc) are not available to be played and are not scheduled to appear in the RP, although heads of state such as Anora and Sebastian still hold their positions and would certainly be known of by all characters. However, tyrannicides wants to focus on original characters and the world we haven't seen in Thedas between the end of DA2 and the start of Inquisition.
However, we have a system set up where you can app a non-canon origin. You can play a Cousland who escaped from Highever on their own and forged a new life, a Surana who destroyed his or her phylactery, an Aeducan who survived the Deep Roads; as long as it is a reasonable explanation, feel free to run wild and take your Warden somewhere new. While they would have had nothing to do with the main events unfolding in Origins, there's plenty of world left in Thedas for them to explore and emerge as a main player in.
We also have a series of canon leadership positions available, such as Commanders of the Grey for various countries, First Enchanters, Knight-Commanders, and so-on. Check the CANON LIST to see which origins and positions are still open.
Q: Do you follow Bioware canon on this site?
A: We do not follow Bioware canon. We follow my personal canon: a City Elf Warden named Ellorian Tabris who put Anora on the throne as the sole ruler of Ferelden and Garrett Hawke, a mage who let Anders live. A more detailed (but hopefully brief) overview of the events and choices they made follows:
The Warden: killed Vaughn rather than take his deal in the origin. Defended Redcliffe, killed Connor and Jowan. She sided with the mages but killed Wynne. She almost defiled the ashes but couldn't go through with it and fought the cult, but let the dragon live. Genitivi died. She sided with the werewolves and put Bhelen on the throne after destroying the Anvil. She took back Soldier's Peak for the Wardens. She saved the alienage elves, killed Loghain, put Anora on the throne and convinced Alistair to perform the Dark Ritual with Morrigan. She saved the city of Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep, as well as killing the Architect. She was Warden-Commander of Ferelden for years before her mysterious disappearance shortly before the start of the RP.
Hawke: took the job with Athenril. Carver was sent to the Grey Wardens, stopped Anders from killing Ella and kept the Arulin'Holm from Merrill. Isabela came back to the group and Hawke killed the Arishok in single combat. He sided with the mages in Act 3 and all of his companions fought with him. He sided with Larius in Legacy.
