Athras remember with clarity on how he became a Magister, a past mixed with horror, despair, and death. With so few rays of light to ensure he did not drowned in his master’s darkness.
He was a simple farmer boy born in a Soporati-class family; he was a simple male he took on mundane tasks that his ancestors have done before him. However, it was at ten years of age that everything changes. Due to a childish outburst, he founded out to be a mage, such knowledge capitalize his family into the Laetan-class. A status that opens new doors to his family but not every door was good for them.
Valens Horatia was a magister in his mid-fifties; he was searching for an apprentice. An apprentice that was controllable and unknowable to the rest of the Magisters. Athras was going to join the Circle of Magi to provide for his family; however, Valens stopped him with an offer. The offer was to become his apprentice. Such an opportunity was amazing, as there a high chance that he can become a magister. Even so, as an apprentice he can take care of his family even better than a Tevinter Circle mage. Athras accept in the knowledge that he will help his family, the Direnni, soar to new heights.
Unfortunately, Athras should have learned more about his new master before accepting. Valens was cruel and sadist man. His training was ruthless and utterly without mercy. His education was brutal, and full of imaginable pain; be it physical or magical. Valens made sure he read every tome and book he have, on anything and everything in Thedas. Valens coveted intelligence, so he made sure that Athras was intelligent. He detests blind rage, so he forces Athras to be calm. He hates weaknesses, so he bleeds out every weakness from his body.
For years, such training took a toll on his body and mind. It was not until he was fourteen that he found out Valens killed his family, Valens believes that his family was a weakness and needed to be remove. Where before a spark of hatred, it was turned into an inferno. It was then he begins plotting the assassination of Magister Valens Horatia.
Over the years, he met with Valens’ business and political contacts and allies. He became involved of Valens’ business ventures and information on his court. He joined Valens in senatorial meetings and was train in the bloodletting politics of Minrathous. He drowned in the knowledge of blood magic. He became knowledgeable on histories, cultures, governments and militaries. To Valens’ knowledge was power and he wanted his apprentice to have power.
Athras changes dramatically from his previously form in both body and personality. His black hair reaches his shoulders, his purple eyes took on a hidden look full of mysterious. His body filled out with muscles where previously it was just bones. He gains a sinewy body, with wide shoulders and narrowed waist.
His intelligence was renowned, his calmness respected, his ruthlessness feared. He pushes both his body and mind to reach and surpass Valens’ standards. Every move he make is calculated, every action he plan a step ahead of everyone else. His knowledge and intelligence made him feared and revered.
One who is perceived as a dangerous mage, who is powerful and cunning enough to replace Valens.
Unsurprising, he had numerous assassinations. However, he survived each one, always reappearing from each attempt nonchalant.
Valens was proud of his apprentice, at twenty-two he surpass him in both knowledge and power. In the next three years, he taught Athras his remaining knowledge on blood magic and his hidden experiments concerning it.
What he did not know was over the last few years, Athras had commanded the entire loyalty, or at least obedience, from his court. He took over his contacts and allies, even made new ones; he gained authority over his businesses. Valens thought he was loyal, where in fact Athras was waiting until he took all his knowledge before deposing him.
It was at twenty-six of age, that Athras made his move. It was not hard to convince manipulated his enemies to attacking him when he was alone. It was simple and efficient.
Nevertheless, Valens was dead and as his apprentice, he was the heir to his estate and seat on the Magisterium. One would expect pride, satisfaction, or even relief at the death of his tormentor. In truth, Athras did not feel anything.
He settled in his position as Magister and for the next six years, he made strong influences within the Imperial Senate. He formed a image of a well-spoken, well-connected, impartial man. A person, that value intelligence, knowledge, and competence. He is one of the moderate magisters, a person that wish for the best of the Tevinter Imperium. His impartial views created a strong voice in the senate, his influential voice can shift votes to any one side.
Athras remember quite well on the history of his raise to magister. However, the past shall stay in the past as he watches the carnage that sweeps across Thedas. He prepares to ensure the Imperium can weather the storm.
