And you don't have a clue what you're messin' with
With a fire in her eyes and the manner that can part a crowd, Melisande give a typical impression of a stalwart member of the Templar Order she serves – of someone resolute, level-headed, and who keeps the peace. It's not terribly far from the truth, though it would be a lie to say she wasn't a bit more of a rebellious soul with perhaps too much independent thought than one would hope for in a member of your devout army. While she believes in the Order she joined and the ideals she'd protecting, she's not the 'swing first and ask questions later because obviously it's the Maker's will' type.
That's not to say her first priority isn't protection of the public – quite the opposite, as she's prone to decisions that will keep the safety of the many assured. She's been branded as callous, though she merely considers it practical – you can't save every poor lost soul with a sob story up their sleeve, and she has no time for it – if you're endangering the people she's sworn to protect, she will rarely care what you have to excuse it. She holds a great appreciation for order and stability, but to that end, is also nitpicky – she want things done how she wants them, no ifs or buts. He has no patience after someone has reached her mental 'time allotment' for a task, though often they're ridiculously small time windows in comparison to whatever the task is. She believes she'd entitled to your full respect and attention as soon as she requires at – she's a busy woman, and has no time for the other matters on your to do list, so you'd best do what she wants first. Even amongst fellow templars she's seen as something of a humorless hardass – and to be frank, she is.
However, she's not a heartless shrew – she would have never joined the Order if that were the case. Melisande genuinely believes she's doing some good, protecting the people – but she knows life is full of tough choices, and you need to make them fast before even more people suffer. She's not as sure of herself as she likes people to believe, either – independent and hard-headed, sure, and bold as hell with most things, but she questions herself more than she likes to admit – and don't even get started if you allow her to wander into a subject matter she has absolutely zero confidence in, a disaster waiting to happen is what that is. Which is most things not related to her job, something she's almost married to. She's been called an ass-kisser on many occasion, but it's a misplaced accusation - she genuinely respects her superiors, and even moreso the higher members of the Chantry. She's dedicated, and absolutely loyal, but her methods of showing it are along the less socially approved lines – at least from the standpoint of those she works with.
And you can't see to the best in me
Born in a small community to the northeast of the Nahasin Marshes in Orlais, Melisande was the only daughter of a gaggle of the five children belonging to Corbin and Lucetta DuFont, who were the closest thing to the 'upper echelon' a small town could have – her father owning the local inn and tavern, and her mother a co-owner of the only clothing shop in town. Growing up with three older brothers (and a few years after her own birth, a younger one to boot) would be a trying task for any young lady, but Melisande managed it, with no small amount of grief, and perhaps more interesting stories than you'd ever expect a straight-laced templar to have – but all in all, even with four terrors at her heels, her childhood wasn't terribly extraordinary or notable. But some factors of it are definitely what shaped her career choices, in a manner of speaking – though she doubted her mother expected this was the 'Chantry service' she expected her only daughter to take.
She remembered how much the priests at their small Chantry helped almost all her friends growing up, how one in particular would help her hide from her brothers when she couldn't take them any more, and despite all the heavy hint her mother dropped about her swearing herself to the service of the Maker, she never balked at the idea – she always quite liked it. Perhaps the point of her mother attempting to get her to join the priesthood flew right over her head, because she most certainly did not get the reaction she'd expected when she'd informed her parents that she'd signed up for the most recent Templar Order recruitment campaign.
She defended her choice until the end, even through the multiple arguments that followed in the months after her induction, disliking the idea of being peaceable and civil, as the priests were – she'd seen so many of the revered mothers she so admired and thought of as family talked down towards or generally treated with great disrespect, and she knew she would never be able to take such things lying down – she was far better off where she could properly defend herself if need be. Besides, if two of her brothers could go off to become Chevaliers, why couldn't she be a templar? It took time, but eventually, when she was granted a full knighthood at the age of twenty-one, her parents had actually warmed to the idea of their daughter serving the Maker as a holy sword.
After her knighthood was granted, they began to slowly move her farther and farther away from her family, new designations to help solve this problem in a town just down the road, oh, and while you're nearby swing by Montfort and help with an apostate hunt, and surely you'd like to drop by Val Royeaux, your old knight-commander is stationed there now...so on and so forth. Over time she simply became accustomed to only knowing her family through a fairly consistent stream of letters. Despite all her bouncing about, she was never once assigned directly to one of the Circles, so when the uprising began, she perhaps felt a but more detached from it than she should have – she'd assisted other templars in their searches for particular maleficarum, but had never fulfilled the templar staple of guarding a circle, so when she heard of the rumblings that reached out from Kirkwall, it effected her very little. That was, until the backlash of the whole affair hit sometime later, and she was once again reassigned, even farther south.
Not to mention the news of the Templar Order's defection from the Chantry. That threw her for a loop, and while she'd debated with several of her fellow templars on the matter of if remaining was wise idea, in the end she'd cautiously remained, and set out to fulfill her most recent post.
'Cause it's more than your heart can take
She's currently stationed in the town of Jader (with a constant reminder to be ready to move wherever they may need backup) playing border patrol for any mages attempting to escape into Fereldan. She's had yet to be fully dragged into this conflict, and while she's heard many a story, each more wild than the next, she's had yet to actually encounter this apparent army of mages rebelling. The recent extrication of the templars from the Chantry has shaken her faith in the system, as well, but with little other knowledge of where to go or what to do, she'd remained with the order, but has taken believing things once she sees them for herself – the safest, and most logical way to approach most problems.
