Gus does not know where he was born, but even if he knew, he probably wouldn't consider himself of that nation. A slave gets passed through many hands. Gus never knew his father. He was sold separately from his mother when he was nine. He was beaten by his human lords, the theory of his worthlessness shoved down his throat. If it weren't for Nana, another elf mother who had been separated from her own children, to comfort him and finish raising him, he might have gone mad. 

When Gus was fifteen, his owner got into a bar fight at a local tavern and was subsequently knocked out cold. He had been serving his master by maintaining the mules on that day's short journey. He took the opportunity to run off. 

Gus almost returned for want of food, but he was lucky enough to stumble upon a band of highway robbers. Gus persuaded them to let him help them. He could serve as a distraction, or lead their victims into a trap. He learned everything from the rogues, travelling from village to town. Gus had many comedic adventures, one that ended in a baby.
