infiltrating a tevinter mansion and infiltrating an orlesian one are two very different scenarios, she's found. freya should know. freya even broke into the home of a lesser magister as a test case. one did not simply waltz into the home as a performer - if anything, the bard got the impression that waltzing of any kind would be looked down upon in anyplace outside of a formal ballroom.
once, freya might have felt as if tevinter suited her better than the masked empire, but that was never her choice to make. the visitor makes the accommodations - never the host. it would be generous to consider herself a visitor at all. an intruder, more like.
even an intruder has to play by the rules. whatever powers a magister may have, the servants are the true lifeblood of a household. freya questions exactly two of them. a few coppers are enough to motivate the new arrival of the household. she is less lucky with the slave who has had all of her hope beaten out of her, motivated by no worldly riches. if the donkey will not accept the carrot, then freya always has a stick at her disposal.
she puts the girl to sleep after obtaining satisfactory answers. better for her to think that she dreamt up the whole encounter.
she is content, but no less wary. freya has spent many days in reconnaissance for this, and even more days researching the architecture styles of tevinter homes for the benefit of the places that she is not able to see. there is nothing that isn't odd about this assignment - even the most prudent of tevinters could not resist a good window view. for the study to be located this far inward is ... strange. this could have been a half-hour job. instead, it takes twice the time.
freya narrows her eyes as she approaches the room, finally. she would not be surprised at all if this were a trap. while the crows were pretty good about passing actual jobs onto her, they didn't check into the authenticity too closely. it certainly wasn't worth the effort for someone who wasn't actually a member in their ranks.
she detects no traps, but that is no reason to lower her guard. this is the empire of mages, after all. knowing what they are capable, fire traps might actually be preferable.
there is not a single guard. tevinter arrogance, or has she been played? whatever the answer, her goal is clear. she draws her knives - there was never room for pretense here, not in a tevinter house.
footsteps come up behind her, and freya knows that charging headfirst into the lion's den was never an option. whether the person behind her is a returning guard or a simple maid, freya spares no pity. not at the cost of her first priority.
